FIRED Ngezi Platinum coach Erol Akbay’s camp says they are shocked by the “hasty and unfortunate sacking” of the gaffer and will be engaging the club to map a way forward in the aftermath of the decision to relieve the Dutch of his duties.
Akbay was on Tuesday shown the door together with his assistant Tendai Chikuni. Akbay’s sidekick from his days at Highlanders and goalkeepers’ coach Cosmas “Tsano” Zulu survived the chop.
Ngezi Platinum announced that the club had cut ties with the pair of Akbay and Chikuni through a mutual agreement.
But Akbay’s camp begs to differ.
“In their press statement the club says Akbay’s contract, which was supposed to run until the end 2022, was terminated through a mutual agreement but we will have to sit down with them to make sure we are on the same page on the meaning of the word mutual,” said the coach’s agent Denford Mutashu.
Mutashu feels the club has not been sincere in meeting its end of the deal in making sure that Akbay is given all the necessary support as agreed when he was offered the job at Ngezi Platinum.
“There was an agreement on a set budget that the club will make available for player acquisition and the quality of players that would be brought to the team but Ngezi Platinum failed to meet its end of the deal.
“The club lost almost half its squad, which was left by former coach Tonderai Ndiraya, and no meaningful replacements were made so blaming the coach for the team’s performance doesn’t sit well with us,” he said.
He cited the departure of Liberty Chakoroma, Clive Augusto, Simba Nhivi among other experienced players as a void that left the club in its present predicament.
“We remain guided by local football and Fifa statutes and we will be following all the normal channels to find a solution to the situation we find ourselves in,” he added.
Mutashu said they will be releasing a press statement soon.
Akbay first came to Zimbabwe in 2016 taking over at Highlanders but left in a huff two seasons later and re-emerged in Mhondoro to lead the Ngezi Platinum technical bench.
The club says it will be announcing Akbay’s replacement in due course.
