A 10-YEAR-OLD child, who was left home alone by her grandmother, was kidnapped by four unknown people travelling in a Honda Fit, but somehow managed to escape from the grasp of her abductors.
A source close to investigations said the 66-year-old granny from Mahatshula suburb went to town and left her niece at home.
Sooner after she left a Honda Fit with four people arrived at the granny’s house and a lady got out of the car, got into the house and grabbed the child and shoved a piece of cloth in her mouth before bundling her into the car. They drove off at high speed and headed to a bushy area near Killarney squatter camp. When they reached the bushy area they parked their car and disembarked with the minor.
“They went into the bush and sat on a log. One of the guys said they would have four heads after slaying the minor. After about one hour three of the unknown accomplices left the child with the lady to fetch knives from the car to kill the minor,” said a source close to investigations.
However, their plan was abortive as the minor took to her heels. The lady and her accomplices pursued her, but she outpaced them, said the source.
The minor ran to a house in Mahatshula suburb, and narrated her kidnap ordeal to an elderly couple, the source said.
The elderly couple took her to her granny’s house. Her granny, in the company of the elderly couple, accompanied her to Queens Park Police Station and made a report.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident: “I can confirm that we are investigating a case of kidnapping that occurred at a bushy area near Killarney squatter camp where a 10-year-old child who was kidnapped by four unknown people who were travelling in Honda Fit escaped and ran to a nearby house where she sought refuge.”
He added: “We are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the four unknown people who are on the run. Anyone with information may contact any nearest police station or phone us on 0960358.”
